FAQ

Do you actually need a Chawan (matcha bowl) to whisk matcha?

No you don’t, but it typically serves as functional reasons to create that foamy texture on top, otherwise the matcha will look pretty dull. It also serves as traditional way to drink matcha.

How to make a Perfect serving of matcha?

Perfect Serving of matcha:

2gr of matcha, if you don’t have by weight, use about 2 scoops of small bamboo matcha ladle (Chasaku)
50 ml – 60 ml of water (80C hot, not boiling water). That’s about 1.5 tsp or ¼ cup of water. OR 100 ml of water if you'd like to make it lighter.

Start by sifting your matcha into your serving bowl, pour all the water into the bowl. Start whisking with your bamboo whisk OR milk frother if you don’t have a bamboo whisk.
Not too much water? That’s okay! If you put too much water, it would be less powerful.
Matcha is not like a coffee, it is meant to be drank with only 3 sips.

Is your Matcha Lumpy??

Found your matcha lumpy after whisking from cold milk? The easy way is to use a strainer, put into your bowl and sift the matcha with the bamboo spoon (Chasaku), you can use metal spoon / teaspoon, it’s just using the bamboo spoon can be a little controversial. Matcha sifted, you can go ahead and put your water (not too much), whisk with bamboo whisk. No lump after whisking!

What is difference between organic and non-organic matcha?

Organic matcha isn’t very popular in Japan, infact only 1% is considered as organic. Typically, the organic ones are used for export only and it is usually lower grade. The history of matcha extends from thousands of years, and the farmer back then didn’t use pesticide (it didn’t exist yet). Matcha back in the day has more natural flavor, and with current Food Act everywhere around the world it can bridge that gap. Japanese government has a very strict regulation for their agriculture, so strict that won't make a difference between you having organic Matcha or not.
